Open Minds Quarterly: Winter 2010

Volume XI, Issue IV

The Winter 2010 issue featured a story by Philip, a captain on an Alaskan fishing boat, who shares his journey from his adolescent premonitions of something being out-of-kilter, to a period of solitary confinement at Overloake hospital, and, ultimately, to an early release when his insurance coverage ends; a book excerpt by Ronal Bassman, a psychologist and mental health consumer who challenges readers to re-define what it means to be ‘mentally ill’; and a poem that takes an inside look at a mental health ward, the rules and structure that patients must obey, and the suffering and often despair of those who are there.
